Creating a “Decade” field as a SharePoint 2007 Calculated Field

I’m finally getting around to creating this post.

My client has a document library with several scanned patents, reports, etc, that date back to the 50’s. One view we came up with was a view by decade of publish date. Since we already had the publication date in a field, we had a simple formula for calculating the decade.

=IF([PublicationYear]=””, “Unknown Date”, LEFT([PublicationYear],3) & “0’s”)

So we create the calculated field for Publish Decade (and Publish Year if needed). Then we edit our view to Group By decade and then year.

I’ve added a sorty by our document type.

Then enjoy our view.

Finally, here is a SharePoint 2007 formula reference: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointtechnology/HA101054791033.aspx?pid=CH100650061033
